The UAE moves to a Monday-to-Friday week: planning strapping component deliveries in 2022

UAE government entities moved to a Monday-Friday week on 1 January 2022. How strapping buyers can align supplier cut-offs, documents and receiving slots.

Timeline · January 2022

Part of the YAKU industry timeline 2016–2026. Written as of January 2022; regulations, prices and technology may have changed since.

At a glance

  • From 1 January 2022 UAE federal entities work Monday to Thursday plus a Friday morning, with a Saturday-Sunday weekend.
  • Sharjah government entities chose a four-day week, and private companies set their own rest days.
  • Confirm the receiving days of the actual consignee instead of assuming the government calendar applies.
  • A rushed delivery is not a reason to accept a different component specification.

On 1 January 2022 the UAE federal government moved its working week to Monday to Friday, with Friday as a short day and Saturday and Sunday as the weekend. For anyone buying strapping components, the change matters less as a calendar curiosity and more as a question of when orders, documents and deliveries can actually move between the UAE and suppliers abroad.

The first weeks of January 2022 are a good moment to check those handoffs, before an urgent pallet of buckles or seals waits a weekend that nobody planned for.

What changed on 1 January 2022, and what did not

The Dubai Media Office announced on 7 December 2021 that Dubai Government departments would follow the new federal system from 1 January 2022. Working hours are 7:30 to 15:30 from Monday to Thursday and 7:30 to 12:00 on Friday, with Saturday and Sunday off. Al Jazeera’s report of the WAM announcement described the change as covering government entities and connected it with the country’s competitiveness goals. The announcement did not set rules for private companies.

The emirates did not all adopt the same pattern. Gulf News reported on 9 December 2021 that public-sector entities in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain moved to the four-and-a-half-day week. Sharjah went further, to a four-day week from Monday to Thursday with Friday, Saturday and Sunday as the weekend.

For private employers, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation said on 8 December 2021 that the new system would help companies keep their external transactions running, and urged businesses to update internal rules to suit their activities. The ministry also noted that the private-sector labour decree-law takes effect on 2 February 2022, with each worker’s paid weekly rest day set in the contract or the employer’s regulations, and that employers must allow breaks for Friday prayer.

The practical reading is simple. A warehouse, freight forwarder or distributor may keep its own working pattern. Nobody should assume that every consignee in the country closed on Saturdays from 1 January.

Why the shared working days matter to a strapping order

A strapping component order rarely moves in one step. A typical sequence runs from quotation to proforma invoice, payment or credit approval, production or allocation, packing list, transport booking, export and import documents, and finally a receiving slot at the delivery address. Each step that waits for “the next working day” can lose time when the two parties’ weeks do not line up.

Here the arithmetic helps. If a supplier works Monday to Friday, a UAE office on the old Sunday-to-Thursday week shared four full working days with it: Monday to Thursday. On the new federal pattern, the overlap becomes Monday to Thursday plus Friday morning. Time-zone differences still shorten the window each day, and a supplier that works on Saturdays changes the picture again. The point is not a precise number of hours. It is that the calendar of each party in the chain should be written down rather than guessed.

A January 2022 scheduling checklist

Use this table when placing or confirming an order for delivery in the UAE:

Item to confirm Why it matters in 2022
Receiving days and hours at the actual consignee Private warehouses did not have to follow the government week
Emirate of the delivery address Sharjah government entities work Monday to Thursday only
Friday cut-off for documents Federal offices finish at 12:00 on Fridays under the new hours
Supplier dispatch day and its working week Decides whether documents land on a UAE working day
Who handles customs or free-zone paperwork, and on which days A missing signature can hold a shipment over a weekend
Public holidays at both ends of the route Each country’s holidays interrupt the chain separately

None of these items requires special software. A short note in the purchase order and a reply from the receiving team are usually enough.

Write dates, not intentions, into the purchase record

“End of the week” meant Thursday to many UAE teams in 2021. In January 2022 the same phrase may mean Friday noon to one person and Friday evening in Europe to another. Replace it with a date and a receiving window.

State whether a date is a dispatch date or a requested arrival date. Name the delivery point under the agreed delivery term, and keep the receiving team’s working days beside it. Our Gulf destination guide explains why the actual delivery point needs to be defined before a quotation can be compared. The international procurement guide covers the wider split of responsibilities between buyer, seller and forwarder.

If your forwarder or customs broker has published its own operating days for January 2022, attach them to the order file. If not, ask for them in writing.

The component specification does not change with the calendar

A tight schedule creates pressure to accept “whatever is available”. Resist it when the alternative is a different component. A 19 mm wire buckle with a different wire diameter or finish, or a steel seal with a different profile, is a change to the strapping system rather than a faster version of the same order.

Keep the agreed part description, nominal strap width, wire diameter or sheet thickness, finish and tool reference on the order whatever the delivery date. When goods arrive, compare them with that description. Our receiving checklist gives a practical sequence for the receiving team.

Bring the schedule into the enquiry

When you prepare an enquiry for a UAE delivery, include the receiving days at the delivery address alongside the product details. Browse the galvanized wire buckles, steel strapping seals and sheet metal clips, then send the part details, quantities and delivery window through the enquiry page. Availability, lead time and delivery terms are confirmed with the quotation.
